How many miles does you Alero have?

I have a 2000 alero with a 3.4. I just turned 115,000 km. ( about 72,000 miles) last night with only a few of the common problems.
I just replaced the heater fan resistor, and the battery and had the intake gasket replaced at about 25,000 miles. not to mention the normal items (brakes tires, etc.
I think this is a very good car which GM should not have stopped building.
Some people complain that they have a service soon, abs and trac control light come on even if the brakes have just been repaired. It took me a while and a lot of thought but I finally figured out that the brake job loosened the wire harness at the wheel. I jiggled the wire harness and that solved the problem. I hope this works for you.

I have a 01 Alero GLS with 75000 miles on it. Had the front brakes replaced, still get some grinding noise with the new brakes but not too bad. I did not use GM Oem brakes though so maybe thats the problem, but at $450 for a brake job I can live with a little brake noise. Had the front left wheel hub replaced once about a year ago and it needs to be replaced again. So I am not sure whats up with that. A few other minor issues taken care of while under warranty. Over all I am pretty happy with my Alero so far.

178,000 miles (286,580km) on my 2001 GL. Up until now I've had very little problems with the vehicle. New front brakes 3 times. I'm on my 3rd set of new tires. I had general tune up work done at 100,000 and 150,000. Both times the wires on the spark plugs had dried out, cracked, and started sparking needing to be replaced - added some extra cost, but not outrageous.

This morning it wouldn't start, turns out the fuel pump died. $740 was the quote from the shop. $740 for non-scheduled repairs in 178,000 miles isn't bad to me. (286,580km)

Tell them to check the flashing along the passenger side door... My '01 Alero was leaking in the same manner and they found a bad flashing and replaced... No more water leaks!!

MY ALERO WAS GREAT UNTIL 75000 MILES.. THE ONLY TROUBLE I HAD OUT OF IT WAS THE BRAKES AND THE TURN SIGNAL(I GOT A RECALL ON THAT THOUGH) BUT SINCE I DROVE IT EVERYDAY I FIGURED IT WAS JUST NORMAL WEAR.

HOWEVER NOW IS A DIFFERENT STORY... IN THE PAST YEAR I HAVE REPLACED 3 FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS, FRONT ROTORS TWICE AND NOW MY FUEL HAND DOESNT WORK, MY CHECK VEH/TRAC OFF/LOW TRAC/ANTI LOCK LIGHTS KEEP COMING ON...I HAVE AN AWFUL POPPING NOISE FROM THE FRONT THAT YOU CANT ONLY HEAR BUT FEEL IN THE FLOOR BOARD. ON THE PASSENGER SIDE FLOOR BOARD THERE IS WATER LEAKING FROM SOMETHING THAT SOAKS THE FLOOR....MAYBE A HEATER CORE OR SOMETHING I DONT REALLY KNOW YET. ALSO IF THIS WILL MAKE ANY SENCE TO YOU BUT MY CAR DOESNT DRIVE THE SAME. IT FEELS LOSE. LIKE I DONT HAVE MUCH CONTROL OF IT.

I HAVE BEEN TO 4 DIFFERENT SHOPS... 2 OF THEM WERE DEALERSHIPS AND NOW JUST TODAY AFTER ABOUT $200-300 WASTED I HAVE FOUND OUT THAT ALL THIS NEEDS REPLACED.....WHEELBEARINGS, ABS SENSOR IS BAD, FUEL LEVEL SENSOR-FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY, THE FRONT SUPENSION (THATS WHERE THE POPPING NOISE IS COMING FROM) WHICH IS STRUT MOUNTS & BEARINGS, CONTROL ARMS, AND I CANT EVEN REMEMBER WHAT ELSE BUT ANYWAYS ITS ABOUT 1700.00 WORTH OF NEW PARTS. THEY SAID THE WHOLE FRONT SUPENSION WAS WORE OUT AND WAS NO WONDER MY CAR DIDNT HANDLE GOOD. THIS SHOULD FIX EVERYTHING BUT THE WATER LEAKING ON THE PASSENGER SIDE WHICH IT HAS TO GO BACK LATER FOR THAT.
THE DEALERSHIP SAID THEY HAD ANOTHER ALERO THERE RIGHT NOW WITH THE SAME PROBLEMS...
I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE!!!!! GLAD TO KNOW IM NOT.

HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE ELSE....

1999 Alero--4DR GLS approaching 100k miles

Service history is about average for a car of its age and wear--

3rd set of tires
3 Window Regulators
2 Window Replacements
1 Brake Job
Warped Rotors
Head Gasket
Cracked Engine Mount
3 Alloy Rims replaced (split while driving hence 1st set of tires)
1 Radio replacement
Tail light assembly replacement
Coolant Leak
Aftermarket radio

The dealership where I bought it keeps offering me ridiculous amounts of money to trade it in for a new car. They now carry Mazda and Hyundai. I may take them up on this.

This is the longest I have EVER owned a car. For what this car is and for the price-point-- you get what you pay for. It drives well, is comfortable and it has cost me about 7-8k to maintain-- It's been off the road a total of 8 days in 6 years for any kind of repair.

It will become the not-so-pretty car-- when the new addition Pontiac Solstice arrives.

I have a 2001 Alero with the 2.4L and 5 speed. As of now, it has only 7,500 miles.

wow backup, thats nuts, 7500 miles...either you never drove it or it was owned by a little old lady that only drove back and forth to church...ya know how that story goes...

I have a 2004 3.4 auto with 16,000 miles on it. In the past 3 months, i have put on a HUGE 800 miles...LOL gotta love having a company car to put all the miles on.

Hi, I haven't posted in this thread yet, so I figured I'd add my car.

I have a 2000 Alero GL 3400V6 with 66,700miles (just rolled to that as I parked it in the garage tonight!)

Now i'm curious, do the rest of you get about 25-27mpg around town like I do? I use standard 87 fuel and drive kinda spirited. I've really been impressed with the gas mileage I get. (Of course my previous vehicle was lucky to get 17 under the same conditions only LESS spirited!)

And about that little old lady story, I know one of them that still drives some early 1970's Chevy Coupe that only has 30,000 original miles on it. Sometimes it can be true!

Joc, 25-27is pretty decent for around town....I don't get that....I'm hapy to get that on a trip. I think I usually get around 22 or so around here...The best I've ever got was 32 and that was on a trip to NC under favorable conditions.

Haha, no little old lady was involved (imagine a granny driving a manual transmission!)- I bought it new for use as a commuter car. However, my office was relocated soon after purchase and it became more convenient to take the train. Thus, it sat in the garage getting very little use until recently. Go figure. :o

Dump it!!

I got 53k on my 2001 GLS 4 dr. As mine is almost out of warranty, I want to hear some stories about high mileage Aleros. Basically, I want an idea if I should keep the car or not.

Hi Brett as a previous Alero owner, all I can say is dump it!! I had a 2000 Alero and just recently sold it at 160,000 kms. It caused me nothing but problems, and a depleting bank account. The repairs on this car were just outrageous, everything from wheel bearings, new battery, fuel pump, water pump, intake manifold gasket, air intake, and on and on and on. I realize that there are nornal wear and tear things but the only thing that had to be replaced b/c of wear and tear were the brakes. It cost me a lot of money month after month, it just never seemed to run properly. I maintained that car so well it looked like it came off the lot when I sold it. But to no avail the car did not reciprocate the love it received. I say get rid of it or you'll be stuck with a car with no resale value and a depleting bank account. Just be forwarned and maybe check out a few of the other reviews for the Alero and you'll be on the bandwagon soon enough.

1999 GLS Coupe here with close to 250,000 miles on it. Yep...a quarter of a million miles.... this is the one and only "million mile alero project" here. It's had it's issues, but 250,000 miles? I mean c'mon, you can't complain too much. Water pump replaced 2x, alternator 2x, power steering pump 1x, both window motors 1x each, I had the water leak issue (and still do, though it's not as bad after 6 trips to the dealer - loooong story), replaced the front wheel bearing/hubs 2x each, rear suspension replaced last summer, had to replace upper and lower intake manifold gaskets and both head gaskets last summer. Current issues.... right side axle seal has leaked since 2000, tranny is in rough shape (I just picked up a replacement to put in), fuel gauge doesn't work and fuel pump is intermittently failing (both remedied by replacing the fuel pump which I already have a replacement for), steering rack leaks (already have a replacement), front suspension is shot (original still!! already have a replacement for that too), and the A/C system leaks ever since the last time it was in the body shop. I just bought a parts car which I will use to rehab much of mine. My interior is shot, as would be expected from a 250,000 mile car. Admittedly, I'm not easy on cars. Though it was never intended as such when I bought it, it ended up being used for heavy stop and go commuting, pizza deliver, newspaper delivery and transporting the kids. It's been wrecked god only knows how many times, though not all of them were me personally. I have definitely gotten my moneys worth out of this car, despite the issues. And admittedly I don't pay dealer/shop prices for repairs and maintenance either. I'm a big fan of the salvage yard parts, and I turn my own wrenches.

We have about 31000miles on our 01 4dr GX. Great car and pretty effeicent with the 2.4 and automatic. No major problems to boot. We purchased used in Feb 04 with 12000miles on it.

I just broke 69,000 miles on my '99 GLS sedan with a 3.4 today.

Ive got just over 108,000 miles on my 2000 Alero (v6 auto) and so far I have never had it die on me or have to replace anything major. The problems I have had however are:

1: Rear speakers went out, I replaced the entire stereo system with a Kenwood deck, an Alpine amp, and 4 new Infinity Kappa speakers.

2: Rotors went out prematurely, I replaced them with after market rotors, brake pads, tires, and rims.

3: Passenger side window motor died, followed by the driver side window regulator clip breaking a month later, followed by the regulator clip breaking on the passenger side front window, followed by the passenger side window regulator breaking, followed by the driver side window sash breaking. This was a pain but 7 regulator clips later (long story, but I have 3 new ones if anyone wants them, I really don't need them, there the really expensive white ones), 2 passenger side motors (I have an extra motor now too), and some duck tape and now all of the windows work flawlessly.

4: The turn signal switch went out, but it was easy to replace.

Other than that, the dash is starting to buckle and the interior is wearing a little prematurely, but it still is a nice ride.
