Only code I had was E022 but I drove it 15 miles since that code appeared & now it stalled several times after starting, especially the second i hit the gas. Today I had to tow it home with my truck even though I had parts with me, its to hot in Vegas to do a roadside repair with a baby on board! I get a feeling its not just the TPS though. Anyone have any comments on this issue?

I had a similar experience withmy '88 Toro. I solved it by swapping out the IAC Idle Air Control. I'd also change theTPS.

Thanks RETROREN4quick reply

What's your opinion on easiest way to change the TPS? My hand fits a lil screwdriver in screws upon moving the radiator hose, but I didn't try hard enuf to get the screw out because it was easy to see that would be a lil time consuming with that stubby screwdriver. I'm guessing removing the throttle assembly entirely. I have 2 spare exact engines so I got parts for days. I'm about to go change the coil pack though cuz the gasket under it is totally torn up & I noticed that just cuz I checked the condition on a hunch (no symptoms at the time) after buying the car. I thought to self, yeah that's going on my list of stuff to do when having the time. My baby hasn't given me time to get the job done though, since my older kids, that entertain her, are out of town all week. So she's asleep now, wish me luck! p.s. funny story coming soon!

AHHH,SERIOUSLY! 1yr old baby woke up12outta12times i tried sneaking away2fix the car!

UNBELIEVABLE, once again I didn't even make it to the garage & she's up after another 30 minute nap! uggghhh! My older kids need to hurry up & come back from outta town so they can entertain her!:D

FUNNY-someone better get a laugh outta this&does anyone got a funnier story? Top this

Ok so I had ran over a lil median curb type thing after pulling out of a parking spot & turning to leave a store, I didn't realize they had a stupid concrete thing there running almost the length of the car, probably to keep other vehicles from running into that parking spot since it was the closest to the entrance/exit from busy main street. Thought to self, hope I didn't damage anything under the car since I removed aerodynamics month prior. Several weeks later car started leaking underneath the gas tank onto the ground. It was nasty dirty fluid. I thought the tank was leaking because ironically there was a dent in that exact spot probably from that incident of completely going over the concrete parking divider thingy. Anyways,, removed tank, rinsed it once, didn't seem very dirty though, let it stand against the wall all week just to be sure no water left. I have several vehicles so no problem with being stuck. Anyhow, went to the dealership that week & got an $11 O-Ring, gasket, whatever u wanna call it, since the one that was on there was jagged & coming apart slightly so why not do it right. Didn't replace the strainer on the fuel unit since that woulda taken several days to get to the dealership & I didn't go til the day I was ready to put tank back in. Now got everything in smooth, put in some gas with my friend & she wanted to go cruising in it since she loves my other toronado so much & I can trust her, shes like me. I went to get the car with my spare keys from her house days later cuz she wasn't joyriding anymore. Gas tank was reading all the way full, thought to self, wow she's so courteous, clean & full, that's how I do it if I use someone's vehicle. Then I gave it to a family member to drive. Later I get a call she was stuck at work, car won't go & kept stalling out. So I go get it & now since it's home I've had only the code E022 (ohmmeter reads perfect as it should on the wires going to the tps fyi) so last night I stop by my friends that filled the tank & thanked her for that. She's like I only put in $15. HUH, the gas gauge still says full. So it was driven over 20 miles at least, probably double, and so I go get 2gallons of gas & start it but it wouldn't start without the starting fluid, this was yesterday, so I moved it from where I towed it & parked it next2my house, to put it in the garage, stalled out & almost ran into neighbors trash cans in 117 degree heat, hood up, sweating, grabbed starting fuid, sprayed again & started it to pull into garage, had2stop part way in2jump out&move tools but could tell it wasn't gonna stay running without my foot on the gas, so I grabbed a metal bar & quickly wedged it between the seat & the gas pedal (yes I had a metal bar in arms reach, don't u?) so finally got it in & shut it off after being parked in the optimum fixing spot. Tried to restart just to see how it would act & of course it didn't start. Now I didn't bother with the starting fluid again since I was satisfied with the fact that it started & drove into the garage which was more then what it did when it was unknowingly outta gas. But wait, I didn't even mention the funny part yet, so now that u have heard all that, the funny thing is that the TANK WAS NEVER LEAKING IN THE 1ST PLACE, A JUG OF OIL THAT WAS IN THE TRUNK2TAKE SUMWHERE FOR DISPOSAL LEAKING HALF A GALLON A WEEK PRIOR TO THE LEAK UNDER THE GAS TANK, SO THE WHOLE TIME THE ONLY PROBLEM WAS A DUMB CAP LEAKING ALL OVER THE SPARE TIRE AREA! u know what they say, everything happens for a reason, so stay tuned cuz as soon as I find out the reason, i'll keep you posted, better yet, if anyone else has some feedback on possible reasons that fate does these weird "series of unfortunate events" to me, please enlighten me. HAHA at least i'm learning sum stuff along the way being a single mom with a vehicle loving hot foot!

UPDATE2stalling&not starting without starting fluid! ALARM GROUND WIRE DISCONNECTED!

My 89 Toronado has a cool stock alarm system, which my 88 doesn't have. It was optional for the buyer when they came out. Anyways, the 17 yr old cousin that ran the car outta gas didn't know it was outta gas since the gas gauge read full after putting tank back in day prior, so she popped the hood & accidentaly pulled the lil black wire that goes to the black alarm box under the steering column. Although the only code was E022, it was just the alarm system, which I have the horn sound disconnected to&i didn't mention the alarm or the starter interrupt to the teenager that was using the car. Just love a good mystery right, but seriously, I knew it was a simple fix since my Toronado's run so perfectly & reliably! Now what can i fix next! Tranny flush, hmmm that is on my to do list....

If Lucielle Ball worked on Toros, she couldn't be any funnier. To answer your TPS removal question, you do not have to remove the throttle body. I did like you and used a stubby screw driver. I installed the new TPS with hex head bolts so I could use a small rachet wrench to get it nice and tight. Once you install the TPS you twist it to set the idle. The onboard diagnostics will show where you have the TPS set and give you the proper range.

Have you solved the stalling issue? I would strongly recommend changing the IAC using a new one.

I have the same problem with my gas gauge showing full even when it is empty. Mine worked great until I removed the sending unit so I could replace the fuel pump. I haven't got back in to it to fix it, I just use the trip odometer and fill it with gas every 250 miles. Did you get your gas gauge to work again?

I admire your sense of automotive adventure. Sorry I am late in responding, I was on vacation.
