Couple days ago I noticed a subtle whine coming from the driver front end on startup. Normal startup has the, I believe, electric air pump running for about 30 seconds, shutting off, and then the engine rpm's drop slightly. There has been no change to how the vehicle runs. So this morning before startup I pulled out the driver side headlight assembly, saw straight down what I think is the air pump (had a P/N and Bosch label on it), and started the car. The subtle whine is definitely coming out of this device. I can best liken it to the same sound as my hand held "Dirt Devil". Is this the air pump? Is this the beginning of bearing failure? I have 6 months and 6000 miles of GMPP remaining. Also, just behind the driver headlight assembly in the inner fender there is a cylindrical filter of some sort. I noticed a gaseous vapor coming out of it while I was listening for the air pump bearing noise. What is this? Thanks in advance for comments and/or advice.

Replaced my air pump

The noise your describing is coming from Secondary Air Injection pump. Yes my 2001 pump was made by Bosch also. Mine first started to make a gurgling noise, like a diesel engine sound. I left it go until the pump froze up, popped the 50 amp fuse and the check engine light came on. Code P0410: Secondary Air Injection (AIR) System. When I took the pump out there was water in it. The dealer wanted almost $200 for the part. I bought one from GM parts direct online for $129. The replacement pump is not as quiet as the original. If you say you are still under warranty bring it in.

Air Pump fix and other stuff

Thanks DeChud. Here is the deal on my repairs. Took my 02 Intrigue into the dealer Monday AM, from service slip, "customer states air pump is noisy". Shop "verified internal AIR pump noise due to scored bearings, replace the AIR pump assembly to correct". Don't know if this is a GM part number but it lists FP Number 12568795. Also from service slip "customer states a pulsating noise is coming from left fender area and could be related to first problem". Shop statement says "problem repaired in above". So brought the car home late afternoon, opened the hood, light smoke coming out of the filter in the left front fender. The smoke smelled awful, much worse than the exhaust pipe. Figured this couldn't be right. Took it right back to the dealer, signed it back in. A tech came out, said the filter is the inlet for the air pump so I asked why smoke and exhaust fumes would come out of it. He stated probably one or two stuck check valves. Anyway, picked up this afternoon, here is what the repair slip states. Customer states "exhaust fumes coming through air pump filter". Shop "found AIR vacuum solenoid sticking causing vacuum to stay applied at times, replace the AIR vacuum solenoid to correct". FP Number 12561324. Repair line two states "found right side AIR check valve is not holding vacuum causing problem, replace the right side AIR check valve to correct". FP Number 12559949. No prices listed as covered under GMPP. Assume if I had to pay out of pocket these repairs, parts and labor, would have been $600, more or less. Through this there has not been any dashboard warning lights. Hope this helps somebody out there. Oh, everything working great again. Current mileage 54,416. I really like driving this car. Could do without some of the fixes but really like driving this car! Redd Planet.

Good News

I am glad that you still had the warranty. I'll bet it could have even ran higher then $600 if they replaced the two valves also. You are right about one thing, my 2001 Intrigue is about the easiest car I have ever drove. I do a 500 mile round trip weekend once a month and that car makes it alot less stressful.:)

I have the same problem with my 2002 intrigue. I have had the noise for a while and trying to pin down the problem. I had it hooked up to a scanner (engine light finally came on) and they said the issues was with the "air injection reactor pump" by a service shop. I was quoted over $500 for this part from a dealer, but an online dealer is quoting $50.00 for part # 12568795.

It sounds like the same part they put in "Redd Planet's" intrigue. Do you agree? Sorry for the late post. Just trying to solve an expensive problem the most economical way possible. thanks

I just logged into gmpartsdirect.com, entered PN 12568795, came up with a selling price of $104.82 and a list price of $176 and change. Good luck. Redd_Planet.

Service bulletin

Bob
There is a GM service Bulletin reguarding this issue. The snorkel like air pump intake has been modified so water does not get into the air pump. The bearings are going bad due to the water. GMPartsDirect.com can give you a copy of all the parts you need and instructions on how to do it. It took me 1 to 2 hours to complete the job. I am at work or I would give you all the part numbers and prices. Look to spend $200 in parts, that includes the pump. Also remember that the code 410 has to be reset. If you don't know anyone with a OBEII scanner you can buy a cheap one from Harbor Freight for less then most dealers will charge you to do it. If you don't get the info from GMPartsDirect reply and I will send you the info.

DeChud is there any way you can just post it here for everyone to see?

I have scanned the paperwork, but the files are way too big to upload. As soon as I can figure this out they will appear.

Do you have access to Adobe Acrobat so you can turn them into PDF files instead? There may be other programs that can do the same thing.

Works fine for me, good info for those having a problem with it, knock on wood mine is doing fine.

Good work DeChud, I hope someone finds it helpful in the future.

thank you for posting this information. my intrigue sounds like it has a turbine engine for 30 seconds...

Anyone got instructions for replacint the Vacuum control solonoid? #12561324
It's under the engine sight cover & back toward the wall on my 01 Aurora

Thanks for the info!

Our Service engine light is on on our 2000 Intrigue. Mechanic diagnosed it as the Secondary Air Injection pump. Told us $265 for the pump and $29 for the hose. We went to gmpartsdirect.com and saw it for about $135 for both parts.

Your site saved us about $250 bucks!!

Now... How can we clear the P0410 DTC code?

Scott

Reset code 410

You will need a OBEII scanner to reset code. If you don't know anyone with a scanner you can buy a cheap one from Harbor Freight for less then most dealers will charge you to do it. I think about $40, very easy to use.

Thanks!

Thank you for the info on the scanner. Appreciate your assistance!

All the GMPartsDirect parts needed?

I have a 2002 Intrigue and it started whining for 30 seconds on startup from the front drivers side. Do all the parts need to be replaced that are listed in DeChud's post or can some existing ones be reused (like the shield)?

Thanks so much!!!

I would check to see if you have a state or provincial required by law emissions warranty before buying parts to get rid of the whiny AIR pump. GM may be obligated by law to fix it because it is for emissions.
