1992 Spring Nationals Limited Edition?

Hey guys, newbie here. I need some expertise in solving a question. I recently inherited what I have come to believe is a somewhat rare car. The vehicle in question is a 1992 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme SL 2 Door Coupe with the 3.4 Ltr. engine. Just above the "Cutlass Supreme" emblems on both the sides of the car, and along the back of the trunk, there are what I would call "plaques" that say, "1992 Limited Edition NHRA Spring Nationals".
Now, to describe the vehicle a little bit better, this was my Granddad's car which he purchased new in 1992 at the age of 81 years old. Being that he was retired, and lived in a small rural community where Everything is within a few miles from home, the car has low mileage (37,000). He used to drive it down to the "coffee clutch" every weekday morning to visit with his other retiree friends, to church on the weekends, and regardless of mileage would take it into the dealership for at the very least an oil change every couple of months just to see a few new faces and have someone else to talk to.
To say my Granddad was meticulous is the greatest understatment of the year. Not only did he give me EVERY receipt from his service visits to the dealership, he included a small spiral notebook containing the location, amount in gallons, amount in price, and the octane level of EVERY gas fill up the car ever received. To put it mildly, in my opinion this car is in MUSEUM quality.
The question is however, is this truly a rare car? I called the General Motors Historical hotline phone number and gave them my V.I.N. They investigated and returned my call a day later to tell me this; in 1992 Oldsmobile only produced 1194 Cutlass Supreme SL Coupes with the 3.4 liter engine. They had no records or information on the vehicle.
So, does anyone else have any knowledge or history with these Limited Editions? Is the car worth keeping stashed away in my garage or should I drive it? SORRY TO BE SO LONG-WINDED HERE (ESPECIALLY AS A NEWBIE) BUT I HAD TO STATE MY CASE!!!
Thanks in advance for any direction someone can point me in!
Josh

hmm a 92 limited edition if 90 percent were lost to attrition that would still leave over a hundred. A car may be rare but could take 50 years for any one to care. Case in point 50 Nash ramblers could be bought for peanuts in the 80s now they are sought after. If the car was mine i would drive it. Shoot off a inquirer to NHRA and ask them if they have any history. Sorry could not be more help my thing is 60s 70s muscle cars.

I could be wrong but I think that in '92 Oldsmobile sponsored the Spring Nationals. Up until the demise of Oldsmobile, "The Professor" Warren Johnson was driving the Olds Cutlass body on his Pro Stock cars. If they only made 1194 of that model/engine combo the true question is how many of those got that badge?! I would drive it as a weekend cruiser, and keep it out of the rain/snow. Drive another car for daily transport, and keep in mind that the Cutlass is usually high on the stolen car list, so the less time it spends in a lot the safer it would be, just from a sentimental standpoint it can't be replaced. Get a steering column lock, it wraps around the whole column, and has a tube that pokes through the steering wheel and uses a pad lock to secure it. This is what it looks like, your local parts store should have one, I paid $80 from my local parts store. http://www.steadfastautosecurity.com/lokitt.htm

Can you post up some pics of this car, in particular the badging? I am very curious to see it. I have never heard of such an edition, the emblems could have just been added on by NHRA. Do you have any dealer information (i.e. - window sticker, brochures, etc.) that document this edition?

Anyways, please post some pics of this ride, I am very curious to see it.

Thanks in advance

Yes, I will have to take some pictures and post them up here in the next couple of days. Nothing too spectacular, as the car is completely bone stock. As far as driving it, I take it out here and there, but don't use it as a daily driver. I have the original window sticker too, but it doesn't mention anything of it's limited edition status either. I will have to contact NHRA and see if they know anything about it?

That certainly makes me think that it truley isn't any limited edition, but is just a normal 1992 Cutlass with aftermarket badges that were added on. I would still like to see the pics none the less.

Later :D

Was the car bought BRAND NEW, or as a Demo? It could be a courtesy car from when the event was held. GM gives out the promo cars for the big wigs to drive around town and to and from the event. After the "big show" they would give the cars back to the dealers for retail sale, if they have more than 90 miles on them they have to be sold as a demo, under 90 and they can still be sold as new. Check the paperwork from the actual sale, in particular, the odometer statement, ad or warranty paperwork, it will list the actual mileage at the time of sale. Just tought about this because they do the same thing every Buick Open. If it is a promo cars who knows who might have driven it!!! Keep the investgation going....

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. Below is a list of engines that could be found in W-bodies. There was never a 2.8L 4cyl or a 3.3 v6 available in a w-body Cutlass Supreme. The LQ1 (3.4DOHC) was most certainly an engine option in 1992, infact IIRC it made it's debut in 1991.

2.2L 4 Cylinder
2.3L 4 Cylinder LO
2.3L 4 Cylinder HO
2.5L 4 Cylinder
2.8L V6
3.1L V6
3.1L McLaren Turbo V6
3.1L Variable Fuel V6
3100 V6
3.4L Twin Dual Overhead Cam V6
3400 V6
3.6L VVT Dual Overhead Cam V6
3800 Series-I V6
3800 Series-II V6
3800 Series-II Supercharged V6
5300 V8
