Hi:

My son inherrited a 1989 Olds Delta 88 from his grandmother. A great car. Had only 38K on it. Now about 60K and missing a bit. Time for tune up. I haven't acquired a manual as yet - thought there might be a forum somewhere that would give an overview of changing spark plugs on this.

I just want to know if this is a normal spark plug change of if I should get prepared for a battle. Seems that I remember back a ways articles mentioning that some GM V6's early on, on the back side (firewall) required lostening motor mounts, moving around alternators, power steering pumps, etc.

Anybody have advice or nice short description they can forwardme. Thanks Larry J
 
Larry J, Welcome to OF!.

Replacing the spark plugs on your son's Delta 88 should be pretty straightforward. You can read this article for more information. As far as the plugs, you can use Autolite AP605.
You might need to replace the plug wires if they are worn or frayed. The easiest way to do this is to only remove one wire at a time and then find the new wire of the same length. Autolite 96198 wires should be just the ticket.

The plugs on this engine are pretty easy to change...

I do reccomend the Autolite Plug wires, I'm pretty sure they are original and due for a change...

For plugs the autolites are a great choice... AcDelco R45LTS6, NGK TR55 will also work... Stay away from Bosh Platinum tho...
 
3.8 Buick engine is a piece of cake, its the 60* Chevy engine that needs to be rocked forward for the rear bank plugs.

I start with the rear bank first because I like to do the hardest first and finish with the easiest, with everything. Its tight back there but not a problem. I use the 2 or 3" extension, 3/8 drive rachet.

The plugs are on an angle so just remember that and it will help getting new plug started right. Do one at a time as stated above so you dont lose wire pattern but actually I believe coil pack is set up in same pattern as engine.

I use the cheap AC Delcos the car calls for.

The Haynes Buick, Olds, Pontiac Full Size (FWD) 85-9? manual I bought has never let me down for any of the jobs I have done.
 
easy way to install plugs without damage is a length of vacuum line or by hand you dont want to strip the head! and dont put them crappy foreign plugs or the bosch nothing unless you want to do them again soon! stay ac delco! AcDelco R45LTS6 it also wouldnt hurt your pocket at all to go on and change those wires. if you want info on repairs of that vehicle without spending money go to autozone.com and register you can use ther online repair manual without having to go buy the haynes manual. its the same info thru their website. good luck
