According the service manual for the 2002, pulling the instrument panel requires pulling lots of other panels and the steering wheel. Can it be done without all that? I want to replace the light bulbs behind as I can barely see my speedometer at night.... :)

This is one reason I keep my dash only modestly lit. It extends bulb life. There is also quite a bit of heat back there from the bulbs if they're working and all are set to be bright.

If it's anything like the 99s and the 00s (and I bet dollars to doughnuts it is), you don't have to pull the steering wheel. It's really no big deal. Just pull the knee bolster loose, then remove the screws for the black surround, then the screws for the instrument pod, tilt it and remove the connector. These pix might help:

Yeah, that was really simple. Did it this morning and replaced all the large bulbs. I couldn't find the smaller bulbs, but I don't think any of those are out. I'll find out when I finish my laundry list of other repairs/maintenance and reconnect the battery :)

I finally got the car back on the road this morning after I realized you need more than 4 quarts of transmission fluid when you drop the pan.... Anyway, the totals: new rear swaybar endlinks, new oil pan and transmission gaskets, drain and refill transmission and oil/replace filters, drain and refill radiator, new spark plugs, pcv valve, and serpentine belt. I replaced one of the 2 secondary air check valves, and pulled the instrument panel and replaced the larger bulbs. Dealer wanted over $2500 to do it all ($1700 for just the swaybar endlinks, oil pan gasket, and secondary air check valves). I did it all for less than $600 and that included a few misc. tools I didn't have and a new radiator drain plug which disintegrated when I removed it). Pretty happy with myself although my wife is sick of me working on the car all day long.

Anyway, it runs great, but I noticed as I'm driving down the road, that my green cruise control light on the instrument panel doesn't come on when the cruise in engaged. The cruise does work, but the light isn't on. The red airbag light right next to it does flash as normal when I first start the car. I replaced all of the larger bulbs which were just 194's and I could find anywhere, but there were also 4 smaller bulbs which I couldn't match at any parts stores I tried (also they wouldn't pull out of their little holder). I went to the dealer on my way home and he said they are part number 16129065 which includes the holder. Is my lack of cruise light likely from me breaking one trying to remove the bulb from the holder? Am I correct in assuming the smaller bulbs work for the idiot lights?

At the end of the day, I can live without the cruise light, but I'm just trying to figure out what happened.

Thanks!

The smaller bulbs do the cruise, high beam, and tern signal indicators. The idiot lights are soldered to the panel. And yes, it probably broke when trying to remove it. I've replaced the bulb in the past with LED's, but the holders are finicky.
