Olds intrigue oil problem

My need to add a quart or so comes and goes. Around 100K I had to start adding some, then it magically stopped losing/burning oil between changes.

My father had a '99 STS with the 4.6L Northstar. The original engine needed a quart or two between oil changes. When he replaced the engine the new engine never burned oil between changes.

I have a question. I took my plenum and lower intake manifold off to replace the gaskets. And my valley is flirty. Is it necessary to clean the valley out its pretty dirty. If I need to clean it out what should I use? I know using a shop vacuum helps with some of the debris. But how do clean up all the gunk and grime. I'm new to this car repair so sorry for using the wrong terminology. I got tired of shops ripping me off and started DIY. Please help with any advise or useful information in this whole process of this repair. I still have to put it back together. Thank you
