Exhaust Resonator Replacement/Discussion

1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue GLS 3.5l

Well if you're like me and you're intrigue has started to run a little on the loud side and you have access to a MIG welder and some jacks or just go to an exhaust shop I don't think they will be opposed to this fix. Honestly I've had this problem for quite some time the Resonator had begun to rot through and eventually had caused a hole on the top(Common). My fix ended up costing me well under $50, all you need is a Glasspack from farm and fleet for approximatly $30, some high temp exaust paint, and an exhaust adapter or two to make the distance of the stock pipe. I started out by unbolting the exhaust at the down pipe and pulled the whole system out that means taking off all of the hangers! I cut out the bad resonator(as close as possible) and had the (27" long Glasspack with 2"1/4 ID) since the pipe on the car is 2"1/4 OD it slides on fairly easy a little sanding did the trick, and prepped the glasspack for welding. I first tacked and then welded the side closest to the Catalytic Converter to make sure it's decently strait pulled off again. Then i used a connector pipe held up the exhaust tacked again and then did all of my final welds. Hit up the welds with Hi-Temp exhaust paint to prevent corrosion from the MIG welder welds (They are steel not Stainless). d and then Bolt the exhaust back into the car, and fire her up. Honestly there isn't a difference in sound....Sadly my car is now actually a lot quieter, the glass pack does it job as a makeshift resonator which is over $100 to buy new!

So... You won't believe me when I tell you this :) :) ,but recently (a week ago) I had stumbled upon a full Stainless CAT-Back BORLA Exhaust on a 3000Gt(non turbo) and I needed an exhaust for a go cart, and me and my friend are buiding, who has an Grand Prix and we have now other plans for this cat back. Little did I know how much this Catback costed! $1000 and guess how much i bought it for? $50! The junkyard didn't have a clue and i guess didn't car, whatever their loss! I thought it was only fair to split the exaust with him in half. I got the "Axel back" he got the CAT to axel. Anyways, last Friday after 5 hours of chopping and welding including the glasspack resanotor replacment we fired the 3.8l Grand Prix up and it sounded perfect! Not even joking there was NO ricey sound it sounded deep and throaty and comparable to a muscle car. It wasn't obnoxiously loud either! Well Currently, the axle back is sitting in the garage waiting to be put on.... (It's dual muffler) I will have to do a little fabrication work to get all of the hangers into the right places,but does anyone have an intrigue with an dual exhaust yet?? I will upload a picture of the system later!
If I do go to a dual or stay single I will put up a video of the sound. Personally I completely HATE the ricey cans and I will go back to the stock muffler if needed.

Would anyone care to buy the Axel back from me? PM me an offer if interested! :)
 
I don't have a resonator on my GTP. just headers, 3" hi flow cat, 3" back to the stock mufflers. It's not loud at all.

My buddy did the glasspack and flow master mufflers and it sounds like crap imo.

As far my understanding (Correct me if i'm wrong) the resonator job is to take out the "Rasp" or the pitchy noises.

Now for the GTP, if im not mistaken those are supercharged? What year BTW?
Now when we did the exhaust for the 2001 Grand Prix Special Edition, it went from stock downpipe to cat to resonator to a Y out to the borla mufflers to stock tips. At the Y the pipe goes from 2" 1/4 ID think to a 2" ID and believe me it's a significant change!
As for your 3" downpipe is it a ZZP downpipe?
Did you do the U bend delete with the O2 sensor spacer/removal

Would you know if a set of headers from a 3800 would match up with exhaust manifolds of an Intrigue? I've been curious about this for quite some time and never have asked!

I've got headers, not a DP, but I do have a 3" zzp catted DP in my garage. The zzp DP removes the ubend, and there is no need for a spacer or anything. They are supercharged, and its a 2000. I am running both o2's and a WB, but have the rear o2 shut off since it can't really keep up with the amount of exhaust going by and will throw codes. The Y pipe on mine is unfortunately stock at the moment. My high flow cat is pretty large so it might be acting as a type of resonator. My car doesn't sound stock, but its not much louder than stock.
 
Sweet Deal, although I don't if this a misconception but I heard if you remove the Rear o2 sensor or put an emulator it triggers the computer to run the car rich? What do you mean by a WB? Wide Band? So, have you noticed any difference with the U bend delete? Like when we did the glasspack replacement with stock everything else, personally there was a huge difference how fast the car would rev? Or am I imagining things haha!
 
Mine had the ubend delete when I got it. My first mod was a fwi and the 3"DP. still not a huge difference, but a little bit. My biggest improvement was replacing the stock throttle body with a northstar and 85mm maf. huge ammounts of increased throttle response. and WB = wide band. And some years of cars did run a little rich with the rear o2 deleted.
