Air pump question

Secondary Air Pump?

If I've replaced the pump, what would cause the code to come back? The pump is running but I have the code pending again. Is this due to the relay, solenoids, something else? Where are the solenoids located on the system?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

2002 Intrigue Air Pump

I have an Ingrigue 2002. AT 47,000 miles I replaced air pump (pumps air into catalytic converter when starting cold) under warranty. A water shield kit was added. The dealer said that water entering the pump is the problem so a protection water shield was added as designed by Olds. Problem is, the shield doesn't seem to help a lot. The shield moves the intake filter to the inside of the driver's-side fender.
At 120,000 the pump went bad again. The dealer quoted a price of $350. I decided to replace myself, but this task is not very easy. You need tools, persistence, preserverance, and a mechanical apptitude.
I bought part # 12568795 direct from GMPartsDirect.com. Not easy site to work but keep trying. Cost was $150.00, does not include water shield.
What I discovered is amazing. When I took the pump out, it was full of water. The electric motor was still working and intact. The pump has simply become water logged. I still went ahead and put the new pump in since I could not return it. Also, the 50 amp fuse under the hood had blown.
One potential way of saving money is to take the pump out about every 30,000-50,000 miles and blow the water out of it. That may work. I talked to my dealer about it and he said that he has not had long term sucess with that. He said it seems that while water is mosly in the impeller part of the pump, it may also get into the motor bearing and, therefore, just cleaning the pump doesn't seem to last. However, I am going to try. As soon as the pump gets just a little noisy I am going to clean it out and reinstall and see what happens. It may save me money. Feel free to e-mail me at dannysg@verizon.net.

Hoppy or others,
Can you elaborate on the state or provincial required by law emissions warranty? I have a 2002 Olds Intrigue, so the manufacturer's emissions warranty is probably expired. I live in Texas and I am not passing the State Vehicle Inspection because of the Secondary Air malfunction (check engine light). I have the same problem with the whining or jet turbine sound and check engine light; otherwise the car appear to run great.

It sounds like there should have been a recall for the faulty air pump design.... Did I miss the recall?

Thanks for advice

I don't know of any recalls, nor do I know for sure if there is a provincial or state law requiring them to be repaired / replaced by law.

Federal emissions warranty is 8 years or 80,000 miles so you could still be in warranty provided you've not exceeded the mileage. Based on a last build date of, I believe, June 2002 for the last Intrigue, all will be out of federal emissions warranty in about 15 months. Cut and paste this web site into your browser for additional information on emissions coverage: http://www.epa.gov/obd/warranties.htm.

Pump cycling w/SES light on

I have a similar problem and the above information is a big help.

The problem, I have the SES light on after a big puddle crossing. That, it seems, is normal as mentioned above. The light went out after a day or two, great. It went back on several days later and has been on ever since.

My concern is the secondary air pump comes on at start-up and it cycles on while driving as well! It an be heard cycling on and off in the cabin while driving at freeway speeds with the radio on! The draw of the system is tremendous as evidenced by the 50amp fuse. My lights dim when the pump starts up. Is there a control module that signals the system to start the pump or is there a valve that is not functioning telling the pump to cease and desist?

Any help would be appreciated.

dinoburb, hopefully one of the other members who do their own repairs and understand the detaileds workings and systems (smog, electrical, controls) can help you.

As for the dimming lights, I've always had flickering lights (and you'll find plenty of threads on that) but never associated that with the air pump, if that came on while driving I'd probably pick up on that.

Great Help

Thanks for all the great advice. I had the same problem with water in the pump. I ordered the part from gmpartsdirect however I found a cheaper price afterwards doing a search on MSN for the following part number.

ACDelco 214-2107

PUMP,SECD AIR INJN(W/BRKT)

SKU: 12568795

Our Price: $118.54

Hi, I have this same problem (2001 3.5 Aurora). I've had the noise for a while, but never any engine light. It's on now and used a decoder which registered the PO410. After reading these threads, I called the dealer on the warranty potential for emissions. I am told it doesn't cover the 2nd air injection malfunction only the catalytic converter and computer. If anyone has had it covered, please advise. FYI dealer quoted $400-600. Thanks jim

I just replaced all the parts for the secondary air system and the P0410 code came back several times. I just reset the computer and it had the pending code on almost immediately. I was talking to some people about it and They said that a lot of the time if the fuel injectors are dirty it will throw the whole system out of wack. I just got some fuel injector cleaner and put it in the gas last night and this morning the pending code was gone and the secondary air system check was complete. I dont know if the code will come up again, but either way I will keep you posted. Hopefully this works.

The pending p0410 code is there but the mil light is still off. Only two system checks are incomplete the evap and o2 sensor. What else could cause that?

Also as far as emissions go arent they just supposed to check your exhaust gas?

Check for vacuum leaks at the diaphragms that are a part of the secondary pump system. There is one at the front driver side just under the throttle body and one directly under the coolant reservoir. If these leak for any reason this will not allow the pump to push air through and will result in setting the codes.

I just bought a vacuum pump the other day but could not get a reading from the solenoid or the check valve under the throttle body (which i just replaced) perhaps i was not checking it the right way?

I was unaware of the second check valve and I am not too happy about the fact that I may have to buy another one. They are approx. $150 on gmpartsdirect.com

Is there anyway to check the valve while it is not connected to the engine? The old valve i replaced may still be good and I would like to make sure before I spend any more money.

Also, when I replaced the check valve I noticed a gasket where the valve connected to the engine. The replacement I ordered did not come with an extra gasket and I want to know if this gasket needs to be replaced. Can I get it just anywhere or does it need to be special ordered like everything else for the intrigue?

Get a piece of small diameter vacuum hose, pull the small vacuum hose off of the front check valve, connect your test vacuum hose to the valve, connect the other end to your vacuum pump. Draw a small vacuum (nothing to large or you may damage the diaphram). If the valve holds vacuum then proceed to the valve under the coolant bottle. Run test again. Remember, connect your test piece of hose to the check valve NOT the solenoid behind the engine towards the firewall. Doing this test should uncover the source of your vacuum leak.

I finally traced down the source of my P0410 code to the right hand (bank 1) control valve not holding vacuum. Here is a photo of the new valve:

I plan to try to install it sometime this weekend, If I have time.

Thanks for the info DeChud. I just bought a 2002 Intrigue for my 17 yr. old and it has the P0410 service engine code.

I had the P0410 code with my sons 2001 Intrigue. I replaced the airpump #12568795 as suggested. It worked fine from what I can hear. The only problem is we reset the codes & went through its cycles & the service engine light came back on. Same code P0410. What next? Any thoughts?

Same problem for me (2nd time), but first was under warranty. Can I disable the pump using the 50 A fuse until I can fix it, and if so, where would one find the fuse? Will it affect any other components?
