Hey, first off thanks for checking this out!
Daughters car, not at home, 400 plus miles away... heading there tomorrow am to attempt to repair...she called Monday, said car started like normal, then as she put it in gear, died. It has not started up since. Fuel gauge is nonfunctional but I make her put some 5 to 7 gallons of gas in it just to be sure... she says she can hear the pump working.. I could not over the phone... sounded like it wanted to start... she has an obd code reader, and it is throwing codes, but not specific to not starting..(p0110, p0742, p0410, p0171.... I know what those are... but I did not think they would cause a no start, am I incorrect?) I was hoping it would throw a crank or cam sensor code... both of which I swear I have replaced.. but less sure on the camshaft sensor... Sooo... ordered one of those for her to pick up locally and hope to talk her through putting it in.... if that is, saves me a day of work and a trip out and back... if not... here is what I was thinking.. please chime in if you think I should do something different, or additionally:

1. confirm fuel pump is working

2. ck fuel pressure, if good, ck/replace fuel pressure regulator?

3. ck for spark... not sure how to do this, but maybe someone has a
suggestion.. was thinking pull a coil pack, use some old plug wires and see if
there is spark?

4.Crank shaft sensor... although I know I did replace that one..... but she did
have a starter issue, it basically broke into pieces... and possibly
wires/sensor damaged? Will a bad crankshaft sensor cause a no start
situation?

5. PASSLOCK? She said the security light was on, so we tried the relearn wait
30 mins and try to start.... no workie...

6.????

I have the set of factor service manuals.. and have not spent hours in them, but will bring them... been mostly looking here.... hard to fix on the phone... etc... any help/suggestions greatly appreciated...

Well no one must have seen this post in time and thats ok... I got it fixed... first 400 plus service call, but ya do what can can for family! I just got home an hour ago.... I had a fuel pressure tester. I preformed the test, got a whopping 0 psi...... for some odd reason the pump was hard to find but there was one at an Advance some 40 miles away.... well I noticed a Napa store right with in walking distance... they had the pump and it was like 20 buck cheaper!... so in the WV heat I swapped out the pump and it fired right up.... This is the third pump in this car... I put two in.... This intrigue is pushing 270k miles...I think it is time I join the folks saying good bye to this great car... it has some tranny problem I cannot solve, second tranny in this too... time to throw in the towel I am afraid...

This is a great forum... I have been here many times reading and learning... Thanks to all of you for your help, even though you did not know you were helping me exactly....

i think some of the regulars have started moving on to other cars. Help is still here, but sometimes a little late by the time someone comes along. Plus, google pulls up most of the relevant threads on the forum without even having to make a post.

270k miles is pretty awesome. Glad it worked out and now you have some time to find something else.

Yeah I probably would not put a third tranny in a car either. Most Intrigue owners on here are 50ish+ guys who remember Oldsmobile and put up with the sporadic problem. Intrigues are not great picks for a young woman that needs something reliable.

Man did you get that right! Thanks guys for the replies... She was tickled pink when she got it, but its luster has faded a bit if you know what I mean. I have a Subaru waiting in the wings, has the classic head gasket problem, which I have done one already and my son drives that. I really love these cars. they are 97 and 98 respectively. The 98, sons car, I drove to Illinois and back recently... some 2100 miles... not a hiccup... has 150k on it now... and he loves it.. got it for a song, they are out there with this problem, and not at all hard to work on... So yes.. this is the next car for her I am pretty sure... the all wheel drive is really something... makes a big difference in corners, and of course snow...

So that is my next focus, way better on gas too!

I will miss that car, it was very safe and except when she ran it out of gas, always started and worked well for her.. but alas it is time to move on.

Thanks to all for the help, insight and great place to learn. You all are the best!

Well this seems to continue now that I got the fuel pump back in.. here is an email I just got from her:

"got to work fine this morning but on my way there at every stop I made when the vehicle was in drive but not moving... like stop sign, stop light, etc. you know what I mean. It would shut off.. Then I would have to put it back in park turn the car off, turn it back on and put it in drive. two or three times it shut off again, but after turning it off and back on again it would turn on and go... Do you know why it would be doing something like this? or should I just not worry about it... I just thought I would let you know. But like I said I got to work fine and on time because it always started back up...

Also it stayed at about 3,000 RPM when I was going 70 on the interstate... I don't know why that happened..."

So I was thinking bad gas... I got bad gas that trip.. and still trying to get it straight in my Suburban.... not sure about the 3000 rmp... that might be the tranny again... Damn... Ill keep ya posted...

Any thoughts? Might be going back to WV,,,,

If the 4th gear has dropped out from the transmission, the tach will display 3000 RPM at 70mph in 3rd gear.

I lost my 4th gear about a year ago. I don't use the Intrigue for long distance trips (have a Cruze diesel for that) so it hasn't made sense to rebuild the tranny.

Sorry to leave this hanging, was not my intent......My daughter got the problem cked out by a chevy place, and the fuel pump I just put in was fine.... I talked to the tech, he said that there were some codes.... one it was throwing all the time was P0742.
"P0742 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Stuck On: Symptoms of a P0742 trouble code may include: Stuck On Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated (a.k.a. Check Engine Light) If the torque converter clutch is actually stuck on, the engine may stall at idle. This is a common problem for certain model GM vehicles, while driving at highway speeds and then coming to a stop the engine dies from the torque converter clutch being stuck on. Usually the engine will restart and resume normal operation." http://www.obd-codes.com/p0742

Sounds like this is what is going on. My question is can I drive it home? I plan on giving her a different car, and want to do this as efficiently as possible, given the distance... just got back from vacation.... not relishing more driving.. but ya gotta do what ya gotta do.... was also thinking I should just give her the title, and let her sell it as is... I am not sure if its a tranny or just the solenoid..... it has thrown that code for a long time.... but never done this... And I guess it could have other issues, like a gear being gone.... The Tech said that the other codes were only in memory and were related to the P0742 code... something about shifting between second and third... I know he may or may not have been correct.... but there is a serious problem here....

The more I think about this, I think what I should do is must sign the title, give it to her, and let her sell it as is... I dont plan on fixing it, not worth the time or money... Was planning on selling it anyway... it has certaily served her well, I guess it is time to move on...
Pretty sure this is what I will do.. will post the conclusion for those interested... sometimes ya just gotta say uncle...

Well we gave her a different car and the title.... so the dead is done... enjoyed my time here to be sure..... thanks to everyone that helped...
