Firstly, hello!

I am new here. Both to the world of the Oldsmobile and to vehicle maintenance and even the States. At 32 years of age I have managed to get by without ever having to own a vehicle or learning to drive. Sounds crazy right? But alas, I hail from a small island called Great Britain, where a fairly decent (on the most part) public transport system operates. But now I live out in the sticks in the state of Missouri, that is only 17,000 square miles smaller than home! My days of not driving are over.
"Suck it up boy!"

Now to my question. I am working on my wife's '98 Silhouette. Driving to town the other day the pressure dropped on the brake pedal. We pulled into O'Reillys and checked the brake fluid it seemed a little low, so we purchased some dot 3 and funneled some in. As we poured, it exited out somewhere between the master cylinder and booster. Speaking to friends, a common issue is the seals going out on the master cylinder. It has been pretty cold out here so it would not be a surprise.
I purchased the Haynes manual and it states that on pre 1999 models that the master cylinder must NOT be detached from the ABS hydraulic unit/motor. Then something about taking to a dealer to use a scan tool to relieve the tension on the gears.

My question is this. Is there anyway I can safely remove the master cylinder myself without the aid of a scan?

Many thanks in advance

Adam
