Overheating Problem

Well, after head gaskets, a thermostat, two water pumps, and a new radiator the culprit to the overheating in my situation "boiled":D down to the heater core. The issues I was having with the temp shooting up and only being able to be dropped back down by increasing the RPM's was due to a heater core issue. After driving it one night and experiencing the same old temp. spikes, I cranked up the heater and watched the temperature skyrocket. The next day I bypassed the heater core, and it solved the problem.... For the first time in 3 months, the temp stayed in the normal operating range and did not fluctuate. I was a little suprised it was the heater core, becuase I was not getting the typical signs of a clogged/bad heater core (smell and windows fogging up), but since this cooling system incorporates a constant flow design to the heater core, I guess it would make since that even a small restriction in the core will lead to overheating. Anyway, I hope that anyone else with the same problem will try bypassing the core, and seeing what happens.
One a side note, since I already dumped a ton on money into this car, am not going to be getting the heater core replaced for awhile. Does anyone know how many watts the cigarette lighter can handle, as I will be buying one of those portable heaters that I will have to stick up on my dash this winter.

Hey im having a overheating problem with my 3.5 as well ! well i know whats causing it but trying to figure out why its doing this .. i have to bleed the cooling system every few hundred km of driving to release the air its creating or it will overheat . theres no problems with rad ,headgaskets nor leaks or loss of fluids of any sort (also just did a full cooling flush). im going to get a oem thermostat from gm and if that dont work the oem water pump as well but before i do could a restricted heater core cause this ? heat works fine till to much air builds in the cooling system then goes cold ... then i have about 1 min to pull over shut her off wait 20 mins till she cools down abit and release air or car overheats in the blink of an eye then off i go again lol till the next 100km ! :thumbsdow

try changing the coolant tank cap you could be getting air in due to a bad seal...

overheating

i just fixed the overheating problem. my 2000 intrigue would run hot unless you reved the engine over 2k rpm. i put in the enhanced thermostat and flushed all dexcool from the engine. i put in the prestone antifreeze that can mix with any antifreeze and bled the radiator about 4 times. 3k miles so far and overheating is gone.....

What enhanced thermostat? from where
