i have an oldsmobile alero 2003 4 cylinder. had a certified tech replace the water pump. After it was installed it started making noise. i took it to a shop and they said that the timing was not properly placed. now the guy wont give me my money back saying that replacing the water pump has nothing to do with the timing. cant find anything on how to replace water pump for my car . HELP!!

your only choice on this one is take it back to the guy who repaired it and make him repair it since he messed it up,if you press the issue hard enough he will fix this problem,he really has no choice since he,s done been paid for doing it,believe me the last thing he wants to see or hear about is a lawyer,get a haynes repair manual and read up on it ,their very handy to have around,good luck.
You have what is commonly referred to as a "quad4 engine" Which is a piece of GM's worst engineering ever..
It's the only engine in modern history that actually used the timing chain to drive the water pump. A really stupid idea.And that's the least of that engines weaknesses.
Bottom line is it would be difficult fora mechanic to get the timing chain off just replacing the water pump but not impossible if he was inexperienced. And the fact that the problem started after the repair would indicate that that is exactly what happened. But you obviously used a crappy shop as he wont stand behind his work so you are probably screwed unless you wanna hire a lawyer and hope for the best in court.
I know this probably doesn't help but that's what I know.

The tech is correct, if you are referring to the engine timing, or even the timing belt (two different things) Auto parts stores sell manuals for most cars that have detailed instructions w/photos on most repairs on a vehicle - call around to find a store that has your vehicle year and model

Sounds like the mechanic doesnt know how to work on the ecotec engine and doesnt know what he is talking about. DAVE was wrong in saying its a quad4 and also may I say the quad4 is an amazing engine! The quad 4 has no egr valve, mass air flow sensor, cold start injector, pcv valve,camshaft position sensor, air system, and no ignition distributor or spark plug wires to go bad. Hopefully it's been taken care of since then ...
BTW - No, the 4 banger in the K car we owned was the same way. As have been a few other motors out there (using the timing belt to drive the water pump).

Sprocket holders. They come in handy and are sold through car parts/tool retailers. Ecotechs are GM and requires the oem tool in order to disconnect the pump from the sprocket without harming the timing.ecotec engine not quad4
