Hi Fred,
Your car must have the driver information system. My wife's 92 88 has that option. I love it, it will tell you a lot, including doors ajar, lights burned out, etc.
After changing the oil, you push the 'oil/5' button on the panel and let go. It will say, "change oil now". Next, hold down the 'reset' button for about 10 seconds. It will reset itself to 'Oil Life 100%".
From that point, the oil life will keep going down to a point where it will tell you it needs to be changed in so many miles, and it will go to "change oil now".
The oil life meter descends depending on your driving habits. My wife drives primarily short trips, 7 miles to work each way, daily. Her interval goes long but over fewer miles, about 2 or 3K, in comparison to the one on my '93 98. I drive about 5K a month and even though mine prompts me to change the oil about every 1.5 months, I drive more miles.
Enjoy your Eighty Eight. Does it have the optional digital dash? My wife's does as well.
