Got a good tip on how to test an EGR valve. Just cover the square hole ! loosen off the bolts holding the EGR and slide a piece of thick paper under EGR , shop said cut a business card , Lift the EGR / slide in the cut card then retighten bolts , start engine does it run better or same ? paper will not last its just a simple test . I think the round hole is the exhaust side and the square hole is the vacuum intake side . The pic of the two gaskets , one is a new gasket and the other is most likely the original gasket . I put in that new gasket ( with the square hole ) the engine ran better / part of problem i think the gasket gave out as there is not much gasket between the two holes . Still the engine did not run well so made another gasket from a sheet of exhaust gasket material . Made the new gasket to block off the square hole . engine runs much better , so problem was EGR or something else with the EGR system / like vac leak or other items in line with the EGR. but this narrows down where the problem might be , as at first i was looking at the plug wires and spark plugs and adjusting the carb and chock . The first pic when EGR is out could put a rubber hose on vac line fitting / can test rubber bellows . and there are lots of other ways to test the EGR .

Pictures are of a custom made gasket made out of exhaust gasket material , to block off the square hole , seeing that it is exhaust gasket material i would think it can stay in / under EGR / long term . Hole punch size was 7 / 16 , fits over EGR pin valve part . 7 /16 hole is a bit big for the bolts but still works fine . The last pick , put some thick BBQ aluminum foil in for a few days to see if anything showed on the foil , Vac line was not connected , so EGR should have been closed , black exhaust gas soot shows that the EGR valve i have leaks exhaust gas to intake side .

If you have an EGR block off plate you could make another gasket with only the 2 bolt mounting holes.

EGR problems are that it leaks exhaust gas to intake side and / or leaks exhaust gas out top of EGR pin into engine bay . Or if EGR is stuck closed / will not open ( lift pin ) do to vacuum leaks or other reasons , then you may have engine ping noise . I am told ping is very bad for any engine .
