I hav a chance to buy a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero 2.4L for $1000 at a cash lot dealer through a friend. The car has 168,000 miles on it. I have driven it and have it for the weekend to test it out before I decide. I will be taking it in soon for a pre-sale inspection as well.

The only issues I know it has right now is the A/C does not work, it turns on but no cold air is coming out just warm. And the rear windows do not work (they are power windows). I don't mind that as long as I can get the A/C working. I care mostly about the mechanical side of things. But not having any experience with this car I am hoping some people can give me some insight into what I should look for while I have it and it it will be dependable for me as a commuter. I am not sure if it is normal for this car, but it shakes a little bit in the steering wheel and driver side mirror, I am told that it is because of the worn tires, which I will replace all 4 if I buy it. The shaking goes away once you are driving….

Tell me what you think????

Thanks!!

John

buy Alero?

If you get a alero and it has problems already I wouldnt buy it. I mean really there are numerous other cars that you can get cheap and they are not as cheaply made as the Alero. I say this only because I have one and it has nothing but problems. The windows clips break, the cables come off the pullies, the engine shakes, and everything else. My Alero although I try and try to keep it together is nothing but trouble. I would say if you could get one for less then 1500 dollars then OK but its going to cost you in the long run. I am sorry to say because the car would have been a great car if only Oldsmobile wasnt so cheap with the construction. Save yourself the headache and look around. I am sure you will find a better deal.
