I just bought a 92 trofeo, ( its a long story, but I know the car very well) and drove it 400 miles home. The car ran great, no issues to speak of, but I'm curious what the normal engine temp should be. The temp ran between 209 to 218 all the way home. The. Ambient temp was around 95 and had the a/c on. Going through Kansas city the temp briefly got to 225, but no warning lights. The car does have a new water pump and t stat and the fans do come on. I'm a little uneasy running at that temp. Would be more comfortable 200 to 210 in those conditions. Would like a little info before I pull the radiator and have it cleaned and flush the block.

Seriously! Please flush your system & do all maintenence!

Regardless of what normal operating temp is, don't u want the peace of mind that comes from flushing your fluids & knowing for sure whats really been done & at what mileage it was done on your vehicle. Plus not only that, but even if the previous owner says he did it, dont trust that. How many times does someone reply with "ummm i didnt know cars need oil changes!"

Agreed. But, it would be nice to have a baseline. The 3800 didn't have an egr valve in 92 and I've been told that the engine runs warmer because of that. Like my dad says " If you don't know where you are going, you won't know how to get there".

It does seem high. My '88 toro is spec'edto run 195. See what the auto store says about the t-stat temp. I'd just buy a new one and put it in. Also, is the coolant fluid level low? One last thing, buy a service manual on ebay. Good investment.

The new stat I put in is a 193° failsafe . The antifreeze is full. Driving it this morning the temp was around 198 to 202, so said the engine data through the Vic. Ambient temp was 75 and no a/c on.

My 92 will usually run between 198 and 205, which is where the engine temerature should be, all the way into 95 degree weather with no a/c, mine doesn't work. So it sounds like it was just a bad thermostat.
