Mysterious Red Light on Steering Column?

I'd like to think I know almost everything about my Alero, but I have one question I hope someone knows the answer to. There is a little red light that is between the instrument panel and the steering wheel on the steering column. Does anyone know what it is actually for? The light has never come on at all. Please reply only if you know the answer. (not guessing ... i can do that) :D
 
I guess maybe I should first ask if anyone else has this on their car, or if it is something that was put on mine? Thanks!
