I'm having problems with the fuel guage in my 01 Intrigue. It will show full (after filling) till the tank is almost empty. Then it will drop to 'E'. It seems not to want to read anything but Full or Empty. The needle will move, though, so I know it's not stuck. Any idea where to start? I'm suspecting fuel sending unit... but hoping for an easier fix. Thanks! Any help is greatly appreciated.

from what i've read it's usually the fuel sending unit

Sometimes the fuel sending unit can get coated with impurities from cheap gasoline; some have reported that fuel system cleaner can help (specifically) Techron by Chevron. Maybe so, maybe not.

Thanks for the responses... My father in law must own stock in Lucas Oil, he recommends it for EVERYTHING. Wouldn't be suprised if he puts it in his coffee... :D But when I talked to the "knowledgeable" person behind the counter at AutoZone, I was informed such fuel additives don't exist because gasoline acts as a detergent on its own. Thanks for the info, guys!

5150,
The metal gauge tabs can wear out and/or break off, or wear through so they only touch partially. Also, the metal slider/fuel-level contacts can partially wear out. All of which, creating erratic gauge readings. Point is, you'd need to replace the sending unit. Or find a whole new fuel pump including sending unit to replace.

Easy job once you have the replacement, since you have access right behind the rear seat and do not have to drop the tank.

Here are the tabs and slider contacts:
