Our 2001 Alero 4dr started growling/howling and vibrating real bad at speeds outside of town. Not all the time, just now and then. It starts humming like a wheel bearing is going bad but then it might stop. It doesn't click like a driveshaft CV joint, it fades out when you slow down, and it will start shaking the car when it gets loud. I have replaced both wheel bearings because I was sure that was it but it wasn't. I tried moving the CV joints up and down too but they seem tight and the boots are all in good shape. The rotors and pads look great. The car has 118k on it. I'm no slouch when it comes to cars, but this one has me stumped.

Thoughts?

Have you considered, or investigated, a wheel (bent or out of round) or tire problem (broken cord, etc.) or a wheel weight 'thrown' and causing an unbalance?
