Okay, I have a 92 Olds Eighty Eight Royale handed down from my moms.

I decided to take out the garbage tape player and add a nice DIN 1/2 size Pioneer CD player. (this was previously in my 87 Nova, but she died on me)

Long story short I ended up buying a harness cause dad left it in the Nova. This harness was pre-wired with the Pioneer end and the GM connector end. Cost me $20.

I thought this would be a "plug-n-play" type deal, but uh uh...

The darned thing would only work when I turned on the Fog/Headlights! WTF?

Soooo, I decided there was something wrong with the way the harnesses are wired. After I took a closer look, the Pionner Illumination light was wired to the 12V Constant (both Yellow) on the GM harness and vice versa. I figured it would end ALL my misery if I switched these wires...

WRONG!

Now NO POWER comes to the head unit AT ALL, lights or no lights. What's the deal with these screwy wires? Has anyone had an aftermarket install with these issues?

Signed,

Riding with No Radio. :(

My friend had the same problem when putting a CD player in his camaro. It only worked with the lights on. He got it working for a while. Eventually it caught fire and that was the end of that.

Gee thanks for the help.

first off welcome to OF ,and enjoy the forums

we have a stereo pro here at OF ,his name is cutlasssupreme3800....
he should be along soon and see your post ....
and he has all the stereo answer's

welcome agian pete

first things first thanks for the props Pete.

second this is a somewhat common issue we (installers) see in a "backdraft". Basically, in this world of audio and electrical theres no such thing as plug and play, take your harness back and get a Metra wireing harness, its not "plug and play" but all you have to do is match up the wires, make a few cuts, crimp, and then your able to play the head unit. The problem with your harness is that its reversed polarity, which is rather common in the "plug n play" wiring hanress's. My advise is to get a non plug n play, and then just do that, or have a professional do it for you.

Thanks for the welcome. :)

It's not so much a problem with getting sound out of the speakers, but actually getting the darn thing to power up. I'll continue to browse until cutlasssupreme3800 shows up.

Again, thanks.

Hmm. Okay. So my Pioneer harness is fine; it's the one attatched to it. Is Sconche any good or should I deal specifically with Metra? I'm kind of paranoid of severing the OE GM wires, but hey no g(n)uts no glory, huh?

I'll holla back when I get the nerve. Thanks.

Letting a pro handle this is looking more and more appealing.

very wise to let a pro do it, i dont recomend somebody that has little knowledge in it doing it, theres alot of wires to get confused with, and get a little cutter happy with. Good luck with it, and have a professional do it for you.

Scosche if OK, i don't deal with them directly, but i hear some good things in their higher up lines.

Metra is what i used for installs. Either Scosche or Metra will work just the same, just Scosche is cheaper.

Take your wireing harness back to the place you got it, or Best Buy or Circuit City, some audio place, and have them do what is called a "Outboard Direct" test. It will determine if the harness is reverse polarity. If they don't know what the "OD" test is, they should not be in this field. i mean it was in the MECP study guide... well if they're First Class Installers anyways

oh man i can't forgive myself for not asking this one, did you check your ground?

im gunna go into the closet now in shame for not remembering to ask hah

*scribbles*

Great info.

I really appreciate it.

My wife just told me that if I didn't have it "fixed" by the end of the week, it's going to a professional anyway.

Not a problem at all man, good luck with it, let us know how it turns out, if you have any more questions about anything audio ask, or look in the "Infotainment and Security" forum.

It appeared to be connected correctly. I left it in the car, so I'll have to go get it and post later. I remember seeing 3 wires, though. *shrug*

OK, so it didnt paste very well, but GM does that, Maybe you can print the post out and read it better, but that should fit your car, at least color wise. GM didnt vary too much in the color of wires department.

UPDATE!

I had a little free time this week, so I sat in the car and just pondered the possible reasons why this &#^$ wasn't working. So I got an idea.
thinkerg.gif
I grabbed my trusty Olds 88 Manual and proceded to check which fuses directly affect the radio. Turns out to be 2 different fuses. I previously checked one. Fuse number 20-somthing. It was fine There was another one Fuse number 11.

I pulled it and lo and behold. It was burned all the way thru.

I went to Home Depot and purchased another for 64-cents, plugged that bad boy in and voila! It works. It even dims when I hit the lights (didn't do this in the Nova).

I wanna say thanks to all that contributed and sorry for wasting bandwidth.

i'm glad this worked out to the good for you .
