I have a 1995 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight. Maybe someone can tell me what is going on.

I noticed in December 2006 the drivers window on my Ninety Eight would not go down. Then a couple of days later it did. I saw there was a problem. I left the window alone. This was around the time I bought my Toronado.

I also noticed the date calendar was a day off or ahead in December too.

Fast forward to this year. I drove to the gas station and gassed up. The car would not start. I changed the battery as the other one was dead.

The calendar is fine now. The window still does not want to come down. It went down one day since the year started. This morning I really noticed something. The power seats will not recline as they should. The drivers window does not come down and drivers power seat will not move other than the memory function. The battery is holding a charge.

What is going on?

Thank you for your help and suggestions..

I was experiencing the same problem with the '93 TS that was stolen. The driver's window had a mind of it's own. . . ususally at a drive through when you really wanted it to go down.

Since the car was destroyed the problem was effectively solved. . . no, but seriously. . .

I felt the problem perhaps lay in the 'auto down' feature of the window. When everything was off and I could hear the window, when the switch was activated, I could hear a relay-like sound in the door. I found out that if I repeatedly hit the down button (like about 100 times sometimes!) the window would eventually roll down. It would always go up, and it would work for several weeks after one of those episodes.

Perhaps there is someone here with more knowledge of how the auto down feature works and could expand on this topic.

Another thought. . . I thought about swapping in another set of switches that were known as good. Perhaps the contacts in the switch are worn since the driver's window gets used more often. You might attempt that option first, it is likely the cheapest, easiest, and most logical. I think I remember seeing a new switch set in the HELP aisle at AutoZone or one of those places once.

I had not experienced any of the other electrical issues you are mentioning when the window was acting up. That is the problem with these cars with power everything, there's a lot to look at when a problem arises. Fortunately, these problems don't crop up very often.

And as usual, good luck!

De-ox

Have you tried de-oxydizing the switches? The combination of dust and the oil from human skin creates a glue-like layer that can interrupt the contacts and make them act very odd. That's why steering wheel mounted controls are always the first to fail.

Go to Radio Shack and get some switch cleaner and lubricant, or NAPA makes a pretty good electronic contact cleaner. Squirt a shot or two in the switch and let it dry before using (about 2 minutes). Bet you get instant results.

I will check into those things. I can give you and update. The battery is still strong. The calendar is fine.

The window is still acting up. It worked again the other day, but not since. The seat controls work. The catch is the memory function works, the other part of the power seats work. The only thing is neither power recline on the seats work. That is the only thing that it not working. You hear it start to work, it stops and won't move any more.

I was told it may be the fuses or relays that are for the seats.

Update. The window motor is gone. I will need a new one. I still cannot figure out why those seats will adjust and do everything else but recline. I looked at all the relays and fuses and cleaned the parts. It must be some common part or something because both driver and passenger will not recline.

It is the computer. I had a 1994 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight and the same symptoms showed up. The power seats did not work just like the seatbacks are not work in my 1995. Yesterday when I was coming to work the whole dash and car almost completely shut off. The 1994 did that too. Then when I got in it this morning the whole dash was in kilometers and switched back to miles. The keyless remote has a delay when I use it. The 1994 Ninety Eight did the same thing. I replaced the ECM ( computer) and everything went away. I ordered the ECM yesterday and I am waiting for it so I can take it to my mechanic. I hope the car can hold out until I get my Toronado back so I can have a car to drive so I can fix the Ninety Eight.

my car has the same issue with the recline on both seats..

Here is the update. It is not good. The drivers door power window motor is gone. The seats have gears. The gears on them are frozen and will not work. He is having to replace the gears on the seats. No, it is not cheap. That is why they will not recline any longer. The seat motor is fine, but the gears are not.
