my 01 alero 3.4 v6 is overheating

I have read up extensively on the system and it appears to be air in my system. I would like to purge it but it seems to be some kind of problem with it.
Or I dont know how to do it..

symptoms are as follows:

heat does not work or intermittent
car overheats.
leaks out of the overflow

I have flushed the system and tried to change the radiator.

right now I have heard you can cut a whole in the themostat housing to let the air escape through. I am about to try that now.
any thoughts

long story short I had to redo the heads and it seems to be running fine and no leaks.. But time will tell Ill keep ya updated

Same Problem

Hi I am having a very similar problem with my Alero.. sure would like to hear the rest of this story.

hello same problem with intriuge 3.5 i took out the thermastat fixed the overheating problem, at least you can drive it, and i do have some heat to not alot but some, i hope ya get it fixed.

OUCH! it hurts i can vouch!

yes i have had all those same exact "issues" as i call it, my car has been one problem after another "under the hood wise"....

My story is very simple, i bought a lemon, I'm a female, and have no real mechanic to trust...
so when i first bought this car in April of 2010 i had to take it right back the next day because it was running warm so they insisted it was the fans which they fixed, a few months later one of 2 fans stopped working so i replaced the switch thing, no problem by this point its dead summer and i live in AZ so things are going well... the car was still on the warm side but never more then mid way mark between the 1/2 and 3 1/4 temp gauge. right before thanksgiving it red lined right before my eyes and wasn't even acting up prior to that. so we had that looked and the guy thankfully said no major damage was done.....

SIKE

the WHOLE entire time I've had the car it has had a bad head gasket.

so basically because of this i have replaced the regular gaskets, head gasket and because of the strain i have been putting on it, it finally ruined my left and right head cylinder.....

so I am now in the process of having that done as we speak i will have my car back Sunday morning, today is 3/30/ 2012
