How do I remove the alternator on a 1998 oldsmobile aurora? Can someone give me the steps please? Trying to help a friend out, and I am not gonna buy a book.

1st step close the hood.

2nd step get in the car.

3rd step Take it to a mechanic

4th step you have no idea how to fix

I did this quite a few weeks ago so I'll try to be quick.

If you're mechanically inclined it's not very difficult although I ended up doing this a different way that what I read online.

I removed the upper rad cover. then removed the fans.

Remove the belt.

From below remove/loosen all the bolts that hold the alternator on the front (passenger side). I am fairly certain you can see them all. some require some fun combinations of swivel and extensions to the sockets in order to get them loose.

I think theres some bolts that hold the ac lines that need to be moved too that are in the way of the alternator bolts.

there is 1 or 2 bolts on the back of the alternator I believe 1 bolts to the exhaust manifold. I cant recall if its a bracket with 2 bolts etc.

Then there's the obvious nut for the power wire and electrical plug.

WHen the alternator is loose I pulled it in front of the motor and wiggled it upwards between the motor and the radiator.

Hope that helps.

I just replaced the idler pulley on a 98 Olds Aurora and looking at that alternator I looked at the guy said I'm going to tell you now if you bring this to me and ask me to replace the alternator let me give you a good suggestion before you bring it.. if the alternator dies leave it where it lies..
