Dave,

Let's start with what we know from the VIN:

3 = Oldsmobile
J = Model 4200 Cutlass Supreme
67 = Convertible
K = 350cid 4-barrel (L34) engine with single exhaust
2 = 1972
M = Built in Lansing, MI.
162352 = unique 6-digit number starting at 100001

By 1972 the 442 was just an option on the Cutlass, not a different model. If you have the original paperwork with the car, you can look for the Code W-29 442 Handling and Appearance Package. You can still request your car's lineage from the Oldsmobile History Center for $25. If you're interested, I'll post the details in this thread.

There are more clues that you can investigate using the information on the Oldsmobile FAQ 442 Section.

Don't know if you ever found out about whether your car is a real 442 or not. However, I know that the Olds 442 badging meant that it had a four barrel carb, four on the floor tranny, and dual exhaust. So if the VIN indicates single exhaust then it probably isnt a realy 442 unfortunately. I do know that three speeds and automatics were later added but I believe that all had factory true dual exhaust systems.

Olds never made 442s in hardtop Supreme body style (70-72). 442=4 barrel/4 speed/dual exhaust for 64 only. After that, it was 400 or 455ci, depending on year (65-69 for 400ci, 70-75 for 455).

actually the 442 was a Cutlass option in 1972. Is was not a model of it's own at that point as Hurst/Olds was reintroducted for the 72 year. The 442 handling and appearance package could be optioned on any V8 model Cutlass that year. The W30 options were still available though. They were available on the Holiday Coup and Convertibles.

Isn't if there is a 9 in the 9th spot on the vin number that means it's a 442. I realize that on that year it was just an option on the cutlass, but I could of swore that if it was a Vin 9 cutlass it was a 442. And if that is true then that would mean that his cutlass is not a 442.

check the Olds Faq page. It will provide you with all the info regarding the 442's and models ie Cutlass with the vin# info as well as the info regarding the Cutlass model used for the 442's. The 350 was the stock motor and 455 became the option motor.

Olds lineage

I have searched to find how to request your car's lineage from the GM Heritage Center. I can not seem to find a contact for this. Does anyone have this information available?

Ed Stanchek is the Olds man there. A fire back in the 80's destroyed all records prior to 1973. So you are out of luck on your specific VIN.

The only way to tell without documentation is by looking. Does it have the handling package? Do the 442 emblems look "right"?

It could be a fake...but no real way to tell without paperwork.

C.J.
