Cool 92 2.3 motor mystery

inherited 92 with 170k and ran fine for awhile then developed worsening miss until no start. sounded like firing on only 2. spark seemed fine so did compression check and 1 cyl none and another low. i think that's what it was. i know 1 had no compression which shocked me. the problem only took a month to develop. so i finally decide to start tearing down a year later(now) and chain/timing marks ok? took cam off and with bare valves tried cranking to find bad cylinders. to my surprise no bad cylinders? they all sound = good compression! no lope/hiccup in sound! so i look at lifters and some are hard to push in while others are easy. do i have bad lifters or are the valve seats worn/pounded down? never worked on these cars/motors/lifters before. thanks

if some are easy and some are hard, then the seats are getting bad. Ive worked on plenty of motors and found that lifters should have a bit of resistance to them. But they should be able to be pushed down with about 15 lbs of pressure (use your thumb and press slightly) if they dont then yeah they are messed up.

Ignition?

Did you check your ignition. do you have a SOHC 2.3? If you have a DOHC 2.3L, One of your coils may be going bad. Check your ignition system.
