'98 Achieva with no heat

Is there anything OTHER THAN a clogged heater core that would explain this: Only one heater hose is warm (not really even "hot") when engine is at normal operating temperature. But with the hoses off, the heater core flows water from a garden hose in either direction with no resistance at all. A little in = a little out; a lot in = a gusher out. And nothing came out but clean coolant followed by clear water.

I flushed water through it for about 10 minutes each direction, and after putting everything back together and the coolant back in (and letting air out the bleeder), the heater still blows air that's only barely-perceptibly above ambient temp. And still only one hose is warm.

Is it possible that the return hose is plugged? Where is "the other end" that I could take loose to check flow through it?

One other thing that I wonder about: The cooling system holds NO pressure - you can drive the car 20 miles, let it running, and take the (new) pressure cap off without so much as a "psst". How is this possible without a coolant leak anywhere? And could it be causing the heater problem?

A few other possibly-pertinent facts: Heater worked fine last Winter/Spring, and the car had no work of any kind done to it in the interim. Thermostat works perfectly. (In fact, it has a new one - thanks to the incompetent [or crooked] mechanic my friend took the car to on Mon. to have the heat fixed after my flushing failed to affect it. $200 for a water pump, thermostat and new coolant - not a nickel's worth of effect on what the car was there for.) :-(

I'd really like to fix this and not have her get ripped-off any worse over it, but it's got me seriously puzzled. Any ideas?
