1994 98 Recency issues

I just purchased a olds 98 Regency (1994). It runs good most of the time but sometimes when cruising at steady speed the engine will seem to shudder once or twice, the engine light will come on and it seems to cough a bit like its hurting for fuel. There has been a few instances where it acts like it is starving for fuel,it just has a cough and won't go for a moment or two. Once it just shut off at a red light while it was idling just fine,it did fire right back up. Once it would turn over but wouldn't start for 15 or 20 minutes, then a half hour later it fired right up. Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.
