How to stop a squealing belt on my 1983 cutlass supreme with a 307

Your post does not say which belt you think is squealing on your engine .

i am thinking it's the power steering pump belt . as the crank pulley will turn no matter what , so any belt on that pulley can slip / squeal and polish the V on the crank pulley . look for a polished V on the crank pulley .

Does your car have A / C ? did you remove the A / C belt ? what amp alternator do you have ? have you increased the alternator to a higher amp out put ? Have you added a sound system that requires a lot of amps ? Have you added any thing that requires a lot of amps ? How old are the V belts ? do you install new V belts on your car or do you get a shop to install new belts ?

notice the alternator belt Only goes around the water pump pulley . Not the crank pulley ! so the V belt set up on a 307 is terrible . the power steering pump belt turns the water pump pulley , so this means the power steering pump belt also drives the alternator belt , unbelievable !
so the power steering pump belt has to be tight .

This belt set up and heavy fan also eats up water pump bearings . maybe we should all be thinking about a serpentine belt conversion . or reduce the alternator to the lowest amp out put your car needs .

also search this forum for the post / thread topic " 307 power steering belt adjustment bolts" .

Some other ideas i see on others forums are . if you do not want to buy new belts then remove and clean the belts you have , so they are not smooth and shinny , then reverse the belts when you put them back on .

i have an old car with an inline Ford six engine , so ideas i see on the ford six engine forum is use hairspray on the belts , some members on the ford six forum also say a 60 amp alternator is the maximum amount of amp output we can ask for a single V belt . So on my car with the inline ford six i reduced the alternator to a 60 amp alternator , i had a 70 amp alternator , so reducing the alternator amp out put by 10 amps , fixed the belt squeal issue on my in line ford six .

So then if a 60 amp alternator is the max a ford six engine should have with a single V belt , on the ford inline six the belt goes around the water pump And Crank pulley ! Then what is the max alternator amp out put for a 307 engine that the alternator belt Only goes around the water pump pulley ?

some inline ford six owners double up the V belt on the alternator, so 2 belts going around the Crank pulley and alternator !
