97 Aurora locked in Park

Have had it happen a few times in past - start car and will not shift out of Park. Usually play with it and wait and will then go to Dr or R - Today seems to be really locked tight- spent 15 minutes and could not get it out of Park - Any suggestions ?

Classic brake light switch failure. As of July 2025, they're $15.00 at O'reilley and fairly easily accessible from under driver side dash. Probably just a symptom of the notorious Aurora multi function/turn signal stalk short circuit necessitating contact cleaner spray under rubber multi function stalk cover at steering column.
